The trilliant (or trillion) cut is one of the boldest shapes in faceting - a triangular outline with three equal sides, brilliant facets radiating from the centre, and a presence no other cut quite matches. Trillion sapphires read modern and geometric, with a face-up footprint that looks dramatically larger than the carat weight suggests. They are favourites among designers building three-stone rings, signature pieces, and architectural commissions. For a full comparison of sapphire cuts, see our best sapphire cut guide.
Why Trilliant Sapphires from Crescent Gems
Trillions are demanding to cut well - the three sharp corners are vulnerable to chipping if not faceted carefully, and symmetry must be precise. Our trillions are hand-cut in our Sri Lanka workshop. The majority are unheated - see our heated vs unheated guide. Premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Select pieces are eligible for our Try-On programme.
How to Choose a Trilliant Sapphire
Proportions. Look for equal-length sides with even corner protection. Colour by trillion. Blue trillion sapphires make striking three-stone ring centres flanked by oval or round side stones. Teal and purple trillions are particularly distinctive. Setting. V-prongs at all three tips are essential to protect the corners. A bezel setting in yellow or white gold produces the cleanest, most modern look. See our sapphire engagement ring guide for full setting advice.
Trillion as Side Stone
Tapered trillion sapphires are widely used as side stones flanking a blue, teal, or peach centre stone. For calibrated matched trillion pairs, see our matched sapphire pairs collection. For other non-standard cuts, see our fancy cut sapphire collection.
