Rectangular sapphires — including rectangular cushions, emerald cuts, and elongated radiants — bring a sleek, architectural presence to colored-stone jewelry. The elongated outline lengthens the finger when set north-south, photographs beautifully from any angle, and provides a more modern silhouette than traditional round or square shapes. This is the largest collection in our cut taxonomy and the home of some of our most striking individual stones.
Why rectangular sapphires from Crescent Gems
Every rectangular sapphire here is hand-cut or recut in our Sri Lanka workshop. We pay close attention to length-to-width ratio (typically 1.30 to 1.60 for the most flattering look), corner symmetry, and even light return across the entire face. The majority of stones are unheated; premium pieces ship with GIA reports.
Sub-types of rectangular sapphires
Rectangular cushion. Soft rounded corners with a brilliant facet pattern. The most romantic of the rectangular shapes — used in classic vintage settings and modern halo designs.
Emerald cut. Cropped corners with parallel step facets. The most architectural. See our emerald cut collection.
Rectangular radiant. Cropped corners with a brilliant facet pattern. Combines the silhouette of an emerald cut with the sparkle of a brilliant. See our radiant cut collection.
How to choose a rectangular sapphire
Length-to-width. 1.30–1.40 reads balanced and elegant. 1.50–1.60 reads elongated and modern.
Setting compatibility. Rectangular sapphires shine in east-west settings, traditional solitaires, and three-stone designs with tapered baguette or trillion side stones.
Modern engagement, design-led pieces, statement jewelry
Designers value calibrated rectangular pairs for matched side-stone work — see our matched pairs collection.
