Square sapphires - including princess cuts, square octagons, and square cushions - bring clean modern geometry to coloured-stone jewellery. The 1:1 length-to-width ratio reads balanced and architectural, photographs beautifully head-on, and suits both art deco-inspired and minimalist modern designs. For the rectangular equivalent (longer than square), see our rectangular sapphire collection. For step-cut square formats (Asscher), see our Asscher cut collection.
Why Square Sapphires from Crescent Gems
Every square sapphire is hand-cut in our Sri Lanka workshop. The 1:1 outline demands precise corner alignment. The majority are unheated - see our heated vs unheated guide. Premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Select pieces are eligible for our Try-On programme.
Sub-Types of Square Sapphires
Princess (square brilliant). Sharp-cornered square with brilliant faceting. Maximum sparkle in a square outline. Requires four-prong or V-prong protection at corners. Square cushion. Slightly rounded corners within a square outline - the softest and most versatile of the three. Suits both contemporary and vintage settings. See our cushion sapphire collection for the full cushion range. Square octagon. Eight-sided square with equal-length facets. The most architectural sub-type, sitting between princess and emerald cut in feel.
Colours in Square Formats
Blue and Ceylon blue square sapphires are the most collected format - the 2.70ct GIA square cushion yellow in our yellow over 2ct collection illustrates how vivid the format is in yellow. Teal, purple, and orange square sapphires are available when the right rough is in stock. Email crescentgems@gmail.com for sourcing to specification.
