Heated vs Unheated Sapphire — What's the Difference and Does It Matter?

Heated vs Unheated Sapphire — What's the Difference and Does It Matter?

The single most common question sapphire buyers ask is whether heat treatment matters. Here is the honest answer.

What Heat Treatment Is

The vast majority of sapphires on the market — estimated at 95% or more — have been heat-treated. The process involves heating the rough stone to temperatures between 1,200°C and 1,800°C to improve colour saturation and reduce the visibility of inclusions. It is a permanent, industry-standard process accepted by every major gemological body.

What It Is Not

Heat treatment is not the same as fracture filling, beryllium diffusion, or surface coating — these are more invasive treatments that significantly affect value and durability. At Crescent Gems, we only carry heat-treated or completely untreated stones. No other form of enhancement is accepted.

Does Heat Treatment Affect Durability?

No. A heat-treated sapphire is just as hard and durable as an unheated one. Both score 9 on the Mohs scale. Treatment status does not affect wearability in any way.

Does It Affect Value?

Yes, significantly. Unheated sapphires — stones showing their natural colour with no thermal treatment — are considerably rarer and command a premium of 30–200% above equivalent heated stones depending on size and quality. At fine colour grades, that premium grows sharply. For collectors and investors, unheated status is a key criterion. How Can You Tell If a Sapphire Is Unheated?

You cannot tell by eye. Origin and treatment determination requires testing by a recognised gemological laboratory — GIA, Gübelin, SSEF, or AGL. These labs examine inclusions and growth features under magnification to determine whether a stone has been exposed to high heat. The result is documented on a lab report. We carry lab reports on our premium pieces and disclose treatment status clearly on every product listing.

Which Should You Buy?

For most engagement ring buyers, a well-cut, vivid-colour heated sapphire is an excellent choice and represents far better value at a given budget. For collectors, investors, or buyers for whom natural origin and rarity matter intrinsically, an unheated stone is worth the premium. Frequently Asked Questions

Is an unheated sapphire better than a heated one?

Not necessarily better — rarer and more collectible, yes. For beauty and durability in everyday jewellery, a well-cut heated stone in vivid colour performs identically.

How do I know if my sapphire is heated?

A GIA or equivalent lab report will state treatment status definitively. Without a lab report, there is no reliable way to determine treatment by eye or with basic equipment.

Do heated sapphires fade over time?

No. Heat treatment is permanent. The colour will not fade from wear, sunlight, or normal cleaning.
