Pear Cut Sapphires — Teardrop Loose Stones for Jewelry
The Pear cut Sapphires — sometimes called teardrop — combines the rounded brilliance of an oval with a tapered point, producing one of the most romantic and visually distinctive shapes in faceting. Pear-shaped sapphires elongate the finger when set north-south, work beautifully as pendants and earrings where the point hangs naturally downward, and bring an unmistakable signature to any custom commission.
Why Pear cut Sapphires from Crescent Gems
Pear cuts demand careful proportion work — the curve must transition smoothly into the point, the shoulders must be symmetrical, and the bowtie effect (a faint dark zone across the middle) must be minimized through careful pavilion cutting. Our pears are hand-cut in our Sri Lanka workshop with these proportions in mind. The majority of our pear sapphires are unheated; premium pieces ship with GIA reports.
How to choose a pear sapphire
Length-to-width ratio. Classic pears run 1.50–1.70 length-to-width — elongated enough to read as a teardrop but full enough at the rounded end to hold visual weight. Squarer pears (under 1.40) read more oval-like. Longer pears (over 1.75) read very dramatic.
Symmetry. Both shoulders should be identical curves; the point should sit on the centerline of the rounded end. Crooked points are an immediate giveaway of casual cutting.
Bowtie. Like ovals, pears can show a bowtie across the middle of the stone. The best stones minimize it without sacrificing light return at the ends.
Setting protection. The point of a pear is the most vulnerable feature of any faceted shape — it must be protected by a V-prong, bezel, or chevron mounting in any daily-wear piece.
Pendants, earrings, signature engagement rings
Pear sapphires shine in three contexts: as pendant solitaires (where the point hangs gracefully), as drop earrings (where pairs are essential — see our matched pairs collection), and as distinctive engagement-ring center stones for couples who want something unmistakably theirs.
