The radiant cut is the modern hybrid that bridges emerald and brilliant cutting - a rectangular or square outline with cropped corners, faceted in a brilliant pattern. The result combines the architectural silhouette of step-cut shapes with the lively sparkle of round and oval cuts, making radiant-cut sapphires appealing to buyers who want both presence and fire. For a full comparison of cuts and which suits which stone, see our best sapphire cut guide.
Why Radiant Cut Sapphires from Crescent Gems
Every radiant is hand-cut in our Sri Lanka workshop with attention to the relationship between the outline and the brilliant facet pattern. The majority are unheated - see our heated vs unheated guide. Premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Select pieces are eligible for our Try-On programme.
How to Choose a Radiant Cut Sapphire
Square vs rectangular. Square radiants (1.00-1.10 ratio) suit east-west settings and geometric rings. Rectangular radiants (1.20-1.50) elongate more and suit classic solitaires. Colour by radiant. The brilliant faceting of a radiant is particularly effective for blue, Ceylon blue over 1ct, orange, and yellow sapphires where maximising colour return matters. For engagement rings. See our sapphire engagement ring guide and our sapphire size guide.
Radiant vs Other Rectangular Cuts
Compared to emerald cut: radiant produces significantly more sparkle; emerald cut produces architectural refinement and requires better clarity. Compared to elongated cushion: radiant has sharper corners and a more defined rectangular outline. For the full rectangular format comparison, see our rectangular sapphire collection. For matched radiant pairs, see our matched sapphire pairs collection.
