Ruby Gemstones - Loose Stones with GIA Certification Available

Ruby Gemstones - Loose Stones with GIA Certification Available

Ruby is corundum coloured by chromium - the same mineral as sapphire, but with enough chromium concentration to push the colour into rich, saturated red. It has been the most prized gemstone in human history for millennia. Fine ruby is rarer than fine diamond at comparable quality grades. For GIA-certified rubies over 1 carat specifically, see our ruby over 1 carat collection.

Why Our Rubies

Our ruby selection is small and carefully curated. We list rubies individually - there is no parcel work here, no calibrated standard sizes. Treatment status is disclosed on every product page, and premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Select pieces are eligible for our Try-On programme. For a full explanation of how heat treatment affects ruby value, see our heated vs unheated guide.

Ruby Origins in This Collection

Burma (Myanmar) - the benchmark for ruby, producing vivid pure red with blue fluorescence described as pigeon's blood. Mozambique - the dominant commercial source today, producing comparable colour at lower origin premiums. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) - produces lighter pinkish-red rubies, frequently unheated. For why origin is verified by laboratory and what it means for value, see our Ceylon sapphire origin guide.

Ruby vs Pink Sapphire - Where Is the Boundary?

Both ruby and pink sapphire are natural corundum coloured by chromium. Ruby must display a dominantly red colour of sufficient saturation. Pink sapphire sits at lower saturation or a more clearly pink hue. The boundary is defined by gemological laboratories - GIA reports state the classification definitively. For a collector-level discussion of this boundary, see our sapphire buying guide.

Ruby for Engagement Rings, Collectors, and Jyotish

Ruby (Manikya) is the prescribed gemstone for the Sun in Jyotish - see our Jyotish gemstone guide for specification. For engagement ring buyers, ruby's Mohs 9 hardness makes it entirely suitable for daily wear - see our sapphire engagement ring guide for setting advice. For investment-grade ruby with GIA documentation, see our investment gemstones collection.
