Oval Sapphire - Engagement-Ready Loose Stones

Oval Sapphire - Engagement-Ready Loose Stones

The oval sapphire is the single most popular shape for sapphire engagement rings - and for good reason. It maximises face-up appearance for a given carat weight, complements the long-finger silhouette of most settings, and showcases colour exceptionally well across every sapphire hue. Our oval collection brings together the full spectrum: blue, yellow, pink, peach, teal, purple, white, green, and beyond. For a full comparison of cuts and which suits each purpose, see our best sapphire cut guide.

Why Oval Sapphires from Crescent Gems

Every oval is hand-cut or hand-recut in our Sri Lanka workshop. We pay close attention to length-to-width ratio (1.30 to 1.50 is the modern ideal), face-up colour evenness, and minimising the bowtie. The majority are unheated - see our heated vs unheated guide. Premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Select pieces are eligible for our Try-On programme. For why Ceylon origin matters, see our Ceylon sapphire origin guide.

How to Choose an Oval Sapphire

Length-to-width ratio. 1.30-1.50 is the modern commercial ideal. Below 1.30 reads almost round. Above 1.60 reads elongated and marquise-like. Bowtie. Most oval sapphires carry a faint bowtie - a slightly darker zone across the widest point. We describe bowtie strength honestly on every listing. Size by oval. A 7x5mm oval weighs approximately 1 carat. An 8x6mm runs approximately 1.5 carats. See our sapphire size guide for the full millimetre-to-carat conversion table. Engagement rings. See our sapphire engagement ring guide for sizing, setting, and metal pairing advice.

Oval vs Other Cuts

Compared to round: oval appears larger at the same carat weight and wastes less rough. Compared to cushion: oval elongates more and produces a larger face-up appearance. Compared to pear: oval is symmetrical with no pointed tip requiring V-prong protection. For matched oval pairs for three-stone rings and earrings, see our matched sapphire pairs collection. For carat-tier browsing of our most popular oval format - Ceylon blue under 1ct - over 1ct - over 2ct.
