Trilliant Sapphires — Triangular Loose Stones for Designers
The Trilliant Sapphires (or trillion) cut is one of the boldest shapes in faceting — a triangular outline with three equal sides, brilliant facets radiating from the center, and a presence no other cut quite matches. Trillion sapphires read modern and geometric, with a face-up footprint that looks dramatically larger than the carat weight suggests. They are favorites among designers building three-stone rings, signature pieces, and architectural commissions where a standard oval or cushion would feel too predictable.
Why Trilliant Sapphires from Crescent Gems
Trillions are demanding to cut well — the three sharp corners are vulnerable to chipping if not faceted carefully, and the symmetry must be precise for the stone to sit cleanly in a setting. Our trillions are hand-cut in our Sri Lanka workshop with attention to corner protection, edge thickness, and even light return across all three sides. The majority of our trillions are unheated; premium pieces ship with GIA reports.
How to choose a trillion sapphire
Symmetry. All three sides should be equal in length, with all three corners at clean 60-degree angles. Any deviation looks immediately wrong in a finished setting.
Light return. A well-cut trillion shows even brilliance across the three sides — no dark zones in the corners, no light leakage at the center.
Face-up size. Trillions look 15–20% larger face-up than rounds of the same carat weight, which makes them efficient for budget-conscious buyers who want presence.
Setting protection. The three corners need bezel or V-prong protection for daily wear. Open prongs at the corners will eventually chip.
Three-stone rings, accent stones, signature designs
Trillion sapphires are most commonly used as side stones flanking a center diamond or center sapphire in three-stone engagement rings. They also work powerfully as solitary center stones in modern, geometric settings. Designers value matched trillion pairs — see our matched pairs collection.
