Sub-types of square sapphires
Princess (square brilliant). Sharp-cornered square with a brilliant facet pattern. Maximum sparkle in a square outline. Requires four-prong or V-prong protection for daily wear.
Square octagon. Square outline with the four corners gently cropped (more than emerald cut but less than radiant). Combines stability with a modern geometric look.
Square cushion. Soft rounded corners with brilliant or modified-brilliant faceting. The most romantic of the square shapes.

How to choose a square sapphire
Corner protection. The four corners of a square stone are its most vulnerable feature. Princess cuts need V-prongs; octagons and cushions are more forgiving but still benefit from prong coverage at every corner.
Light return. A well-cut square shows even brilliance across the entire face, no dark zones in any corner.
Setting compatibility. Square sapphires work especially well in bezel settings (which protect all four corners), four-prong solitaires, and halo designs.
