Natural Chrysoberyl — Loose Stones from Sri Lanka
Natural Chrysoberyl is one of the most underappreciated gem species in fine jewelry — a beryllium aluminum oxide that ranks 8.5 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest gemstones after diamond, ruby, and sapphire. Its color range runs from honey-yellow and golden-green through more saturated yellowish-green hues, and the species also includes the famously rare alexandrite (color-change) and cat's eye varieties. Chrysoberyl is durable enough for daily wear, naturally untreated, and far less expensive than sapphire or ruby at comparable quality.
Why our chrysoberyls
Our chrysoberyls are sourced from Sri Lanka, a leading source for fine natural chrysoberyl. Every stone in this collection is natural and untreated — chrysoberyl rarely requires any enhancement, and we don't carry stones that have been treated. Premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Each stone is photographed under standardized lighting against a neutral background.
How to choose a chrysoberyl
Hue. Faceted chrysoberyl typically appears in golden-yellow through yellowish-green ranges. The most prized stones show vivid yellow-green saturation with strong brilliance. Stones with brownish undertones are less prized.
Clarity. Fine chrysoberyl is typically eye-clean. We don't carry stones with significant visible inclusions.
Cut. Oval, cushion, and round are most common. Emerald cuts suit chrysoberyl's clarity beautifully.
Carat. Chrysoberyl over 2 carats is common; over 5 carats begins to be rare in fine quality.
Cat's eye chrysoberyl
Cat's eye chrysoberyl shows chatoyancy — a sharp, single line of light that moves across the dome of a cabochon-cut stone as it's rotated, exactly like the slit pupil of a cat's eye in the headlights. The effect is caused by fine parallel fibrous inclusions, and the finest cat's eyes show a strong, well-defined line and a "milk and honey" effect (one side of the line lighter, the other darker under specific lighting). See our dedicated cat's eye chrysoberyl collection.
Statement jewelry, collector pieces, durable daily wear
Chrysoberyl works beautifully in pendants, cocktail rings, men's signet rings, and any setting where its honey-yellow-green palette can be the star. Its hardness makes it practical for daily wear, and its rarity in fine quality makes it a thoughtful collector pickup.
