Natural Green Sapphires — Unheated Emerald Alternative
Green sapphire is corundum colored by iron — the same mineral as blue, yellow, and pink sapphire — producing a range from soft mint and pale olive through vivid jewel-tone green and into deep forest. It's a comparatively rare member of the sapphire family and a compelling alternative to emerald: same green tones, but with sapphire's 9 on the Mohs scale durability and far better clarity than most emeralds offer.
Why our Ceylon green sapphires
Our green sapphires are sourced directly from Sri Lanka and a small number of other natural-color regions. The majority of stones in this collection are unheated, preserving their natural color. Premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Every stone is photographed under standardized lighting against a neutral background.
How to choose a green sapphire
Hue. Green sapphire ranges from pale mint through bright grass-green into deep olive and forest green. The most prized stones show vivid mid-tone saturation. Stones with bluish-green undertones (teal-leaning) are often classified separately — see our teal sapphire collection.
Green sapphire vs emerald. Green sapphires have far better clarity than commercial emeralds, are dramatically more durable for daily wear, and never require oil treatment to mask inclusions. They are the practical choice for an engagement ring or daily-wear piece where emerald would be at risk.
Cut. Oval and cushion cuts maximize face-up color and brilliance. Emerald cuts and rectangular cushions deliver a vintage aesthetic that complements green stones beautifully.
Carat. Sub-carat green sapphires start under $200. One-carat unheated stones with vivid color typically run from $300 to $1,200; larger stones with strong saturation move into the mid four figures.
Engagement, design, and the emerald alternative story
Green sapphire is the smart choice for anyone drawn to green stones but wary of emerald's fragility. It pairs beautifully with both yellow and white gold, and looks especially distinctive in vintage-inspired settings. Designers value matched pairs (see our matched pairs collection); for a darker green alternative, see also our tsavorite garnet collection.
