Tsavorite Garnet Price Guide — What They Cost and Why

Tsavorite pricing has one defining feature that separates it from almost every other colored gemstone: the price curve steepens sharply above 2 carats, because fine tsavorite rough large enough to cut a clean 2ct-plus stone is genuinely scarce. This guide prices tsavorite by quality tier and carat weight using 8 stones currently in our own stock, from $1,177 to $22,724.

Why Tsavorite Gets Disproportionately Expensive Above 2 Carats

Tsavorite forms in small crystals within its host rock in the East African garnet belt spanning Kenya and Tanzania. Most rough yields finished stones under 1 carat; stones that yield a clean 2ct+ finished gem in fine color are a small fraction of total production. The result is a price curve that isn't linear — a 2ct fine tsavorite doesn't cost roughly twice a 1ct stone of the same quality, it costs several times more, purely on scarcity of the rough. For the full color and quality grading framework, see our Tsavorite Garnet Buyer's Guide.

Tsavorite Price by Quality Tier (2026)

Quality tier What it looks like Price per carat
Commercial Slightly yellowish-green, included, sub-0.5ct $200–$600
Good Vivid green, eye-clean, 0.5–1ct $600–$1,500
Fine Vivid green, eye-clean, 1–2ct $1,200–$2,800
Finest Vivid pure green, eye-clean, 2–3ct $2,500–$5,000
Exceptional Vivid green, finest quality, 3ct+ $4,000–$12,000+

Tsavorite Price by Carat Weight — Real Current Stock

Our own inventory illustrates the curve directly:

Carat weight Cut / notes Price Price per carat
1.01ct Cushion, unheated, Kenya $1,212 $1,200/ct
1.06ct Cushion, untreated, GIA, Kenya $1,590 $1,500/ct
1.07ct Round, unheated, Kenya $1,177 $1,100/ct
1.09ct Octagon, unheated, Kenya $1,635 $1,500/ct
1.79ct Round, clarity-enhanced, GIA, Kenya $1,790 $1,000/ct
1.85ct Rectangular cushion, GIA, Kenya $2,790 $1,509/ct
1.86ct Cushion, untreated, GIA, Kenya $2,805 $1,508/ct
4.95ct Oval, unheated, GIA, Kenya $22,724 $4,591/ct

Notice the jump at 4.95ct: at roughly 2.7x the carat weight of the 1.85ct stone, it costs over 8x as much — exactly the scarcity-driven curve described above. Also note the one clarity-enhanced stone (1.79ct) prices modestly below its untreated 1.85–1.86ct neighbors despite similar size, since untreated tsavorite — which is the norm for the species — carries no discount, but any enhancement does.

Tsavorite vs. Emerald: The Price Gap

Tsavorite is routinely compared to emerald as a vivid-green alternative, and the price difference is the main reason buyers make the switch: a comparable Colombian emerald in equivalent vivid green at 1ct with only minor oiling typically runs $3,000–10,000+ per carat, versus $1,000–2,500 per carat for a fine tsavorite of the same visual quality — roughly a third to a quarter of the cost, with the added benefit of tsavorite requiring no oiling or other treatment at all. The full comparison, including durability and treatment differences, is in our Tsavorite Garnet Buyer's Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a tsavorite garnet cost?

Fine tsavorite in the 1–2ct range runs $1,200–2,800 per carat; stones above 3ct in exceptional color can reach $4,000–12,000+ per carat due to the scarcity of large clean rough. Our current 8-stone inventory ranges from $1,177 (1.07ct) to $22,724 (4.95ct).

Why does tsavorite get so much more expensive above 2 carats?

Tsavorite crystals form small in their host rock, and clean rough large enough to yield a 2ct+ finished stone in fine color is genuinely rare. The price curve is non-linear as a direct result — our own 4.95ct stone costs over 8 times our 1.85ct stone despite being under 3 times the weight.

Is tsavorite cheaper than emerald?

Yes, substantially. A fine 1ct tsavorite runs $1,000–2,500 per carat versus $3,000–10,000+ per carat for a comparable Colombian emerald — and tsavorite requires no oiling or treatment, unlike almost all commercial emerald.
