Pink Sapphire Gemstones - Ceylon Loose Stones
Pink sapphire is corundum coloured by trace chromium. Chromium is what places a corundum crystal in the pink range rather than the blue range, and it is the same trace element that colours ruby. Ruby and sapphire are the same mineral species; the two trade names divide it by colour, and that division is not a ranking.
What we stock, and where it comes from
The stones here are chosen one at a time through our own buying network. A sourcing record is ours, never a laboratory finding. Where a stone's report carries a Geographic Origin opinion, we give that opinion as the laboratory's, bounded by the caveat the laboratory itself prints: any statement on geographic origin is an expert opinion based on a collection of observations and analytical data. Where a report gives no origin opinion, an origin named on the listing is our own sourcing record. The stones in this collection were bought in more than one country, and a listing names the country for its own stone.
Ceylon is a trade word — ours and the trade's. It is the old name for Sri Lanka, and no laboratory issues it as an origin determination. It sits in this collection's name and URL as a trade name, nothing more.
Treatment
Each listing states whether its stone is heated. Where a stone's report carries a treatment entry, we reproduce that entry exactly as printed; where a report carries none, the listing says so in our own words. Unheated is our word, and it is scoped to heat alone — it is not a claim about any other kind of treatment.
How to choose
Colour. A laboratory report prints a single colour field, and where a stone has one we give that printed value. Anything beyond it — peach-pink and the other colour names on our listings — is our own description of what we see under standardised lighting. It is not a grade and not a report field. These reports do not grade colour, so the colour words on a listing are not ranked against each other and none of them carries a price.
Cut and shape. Round, oval, cushion, emerald and radiant cuts are listed here, along with one double cabochon. Shape is the outline and cutting style is the faceting; a report prints them as two separate fields. The millimetre measurements on a listing are the stone's own.
Carat. Weight is printed on the report and repeated on the listing. It sets how large the stone is, and nothing else about it.
Documentation. Where a stone carries a laboratory report, its listing names the laboratory and gives the report number. Reports in this collection come from GIA and from AGCL. A report records what the laboratory measured and observed — weight, measurements, shape, cutting style, the colour field, species and variety, and any treatment finding. It does not rank the stone, does not price it, and does not grade its beauty.
Availability
A listing in this collection is a single stone and sells once. When it is gone the listing comes down.
