Buying a loose gemstone gives you independence, you get the freedom to make your own choice, your own jewelry design.
A natural 0.61 carat pink sapphire in an emerald cut, documented on GIA Sapphire Origin Report 2235980196. GIA's printed Color field reads Pink, its Shape field reads Octagonal and its single Cutting Style field reads Step Cut. An octagonal outline carrying one step-cut style is what the gem trade calls an emerald cut, so emerald cut is Crescent Gems' own name for the cut and sits beside GIA's two printed field values rather than replacing them.
Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"The thing I point out on this stone is how the colour behaves as you turn it — look at it face-up, then from the side, and you are not looking at the same thing twice. That is my own eye on the stone and my own description of it, not a reading taken from the paperwork: GIA's printed Color field reads Pink. I bought the stone for that behaviour, and I would rather a buyer study the photographs than take my word for it."

GIA's report prints a Characteristics panel as well, and that panel on the GIA report reads Mineral: Corundum, Mohs Hardness: 9 and Toughness: Excellent. It is a panel about the material rather than a set of findings about this particular stone.
The same panel prints Birthstone: September, and September is sapphire's month — it belongs to the variety.
Origin and the Trade Name
Because this is an Origin report, the origin question was put to GIA and GIA answered it: the Geographic Origin field reads Sri Lanka. GIA bounds that field with the one comment printed on the report, and the comment reads: Any statement on geographic origin is an expert opinion based on a collection of observations and analytical data. So the origin on this page is GIA's expert opinion, stated the way GIA states it — not a confirmation, a verification or a guarantee.
Ceylon is the gem trade's older name for Sri Lanka, and Crescent Gems uses it because buyers search for it. It is our trade word and not a GIA field value: the report reads Sri Lanka. Ceylon says where a stone was mined; it says nothing about how good a stone is.
What Crescent Gems Describes
Three descriptions on this page are ours rather than GIA's, and they are marked as ours wherever they appear.
-
Emerald Cut: our name for GIA's printed Octagonal shape carrying GIA's printed Step Cut style. The report issues no cut, polish or symmetry grade.
-
Unheated: our shorthand for GIA's printed Additional Results: No Indications of Heating. That printed finding is scoped to heating, and we report nothing beyond what the field says. The report travels with the stone for the buyer to read.
-
Loupe Clean: our clarity assessment, eye-clean with no inclusions visible under normal viewing. GIA issues no clarity grade on a coloured-stone or origin report, so there is no GIA grade to agree or disagree with.
The stone photograph on the report settles the stone's structure — an octagonal outline, truncated corners, concentric step facets and a large table. GIA prints “Image is not to scale. Color is approximate.” beneath it, so the photograph is not a colour or clarity finding and we do not read one from it.

Each row above names its source in the row label: a row marked (GIA report) reproduces a printed field value, and a row marked as our description or our assessment is Crescent Gems' own expression. Mohs hardness is a constant of corundum as a material, not a measurement taken on this stone.

Buying Guidance
A few practical points if you are considering this stone for a setting.
-
Setting: we would ask a jeweller to protect the corners of a step-cut octagon, with prongs placed on the corners or a bezel. That is our recommendation in our own voice, and it is not guidance drawn from the report.
-
Cleaning: GIA publishes its own cleaning guidance for sapphire and attaches its own conditions to it. We prefer warm soapy water and a soft brush on a stone we did not set, because we cannot see how the stone is held, and we would leave ultrasonic and steam cleaning alone for the same reason. That is our preference rather than a warning carried by the report.
-
Storage: store the stone separately from softer stones and metals. Corundum sits at 9 on the Mohs scale as a material constant.
-
Keep the paperwork: hold on to GIA Sapphire Origin Report 2235980196 with the stone. It is the document behind the heating finding and behind GIA's origin opinion, and a buyer can check the report number at reportcheck.gia.edu.
-
Comparison shopping: when you compare pink sapphires, read what each report actually prints and who is speaking in each line of the listing. An origin report carries a lab opinion on origin; a report without an origin field does not.
