Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"This one is a 1.17 carat oval, and it comes with a GIA Ruby Report whose fields you can read for yourself. Face-up it looks eye-clean to me. Ask me for more images and look at it before you decide."
What the Report Records
The limit of our own reporting. We report the fields GIA printed on this document. Where we add a view of our own, such as our sourcing record, the clarity assessment, the setting advice and the cleaning preference, we mark it as ours.
Read it yourself. The report is reproduced in the images on this page, and GIA's own service at reportcheck.gia.edu returns the same fields against the report number. Check it there, and ask us for anything else you want to see before you buy.
Geographic origin. The Geographic Origin field reads Not Requested: an origin opinion was not requested from GIA for this report.
Treatment. The report's Treatment entry reads Heated. That is the entry GIA printed in this field, and we report it exactly as printed.
Cutting style, two fields. The report gives the crown and the pavilion separately: Crown: Brilliant Cut, and Pavilion: Step Cut. The crown carries brilliant-style faceting; the pavilion carries step-style faceting.
Inscription. The report records an inscription of its number on the stone, and prints it as GIA 6233771189.
Clarity. Face-up, at normal viewing distance, we describe it as eye-clean. That is our own assessment rather than a report value, because a GIA colored-stone report carries no clarity grade.
Our Sourcing Record
We buy in Sri Lanka through our offices in Colombo, Beruwala and Ratnapura, and this ruby came to us that way. Sri Lanka is the origin in our own sourcing record. That record is ours, not a laboratory finding.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
Read the GIA report against the stone. Check report number 6233771189, the carat weight, the measurements, the color, the transparency, both cutting-style fields and the Treatment entry against the physical stone before you finalise the purchase.
-
Look at the whole face-up view. Ask us for more images and video and look at the whole face before you decide.
-
Plan the setting around the stone's proportions. An oval outline has no corners. We would choose a setting that holds the girdle securely all the way round; that is our own recommendation.

Care
GIA publishes its own cleaning guidance for ruby. We prefer warm soapy water and a soft brush to ultrasonic or steam cleaners, because we cannot see how a stone is held once it is set. That preference is ours, not a condition carried on the report.
- Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft brush
- Store separately to avoid surface contact
- Once it is set, take it off for heavy physical work
