A natural 4.25 carat Oval Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl cabochon, documented on GIA Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl Report #6247017765. The report prints Species Natural Chrysoberyl, Variety Natural Cat's-Eye, Shape Oval, Cutting Style Cabochon, Color Greenish Yellow, Transparency Transparent and, in its Phenomenon field, Displaying Chatoyancy — a band of light that glides across the dome of the cabochon as the stone is rotated. That entry records that the effect is present and makes no judgement about the band. The description of the eye further down this page is our own.
Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"What stands out on this 4.25 ct chrysoberyl is the eye: to me it reads sharp, silver and single, and that is my own assessment rather than anything the report grades. GIA's Phenomenon field records that the stone displays chatoyancy, and that is as far as the document goes."
Rarity Analysis
What the report records for this individual stone, and what we add in our own voice:
-
Color: GIA prints the Color field as Greenish Yellow. We put the saturation at Medium — our own assessment and not a graded value.
-
Weight: 4.25 carats, as printed on the report. We make no comparison with any other stone.
-
Measurements: 9.63 x 7.55 x 5.41 mm, as printed. A length-to-width ratio is not on the report and we quote none.
-
Phenomenon: the Phenomenon field reads Displaying Chatoyancy. The band moves across the dome as the stone turns; the report carries no sharpness, straightness or centring judgement, and ours is the only description of those on this page.
-
Documentation: GIA Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl Report #6247017765 records species, variety, weight, measurements, shape, colour, transparency, phenomenon and cutting style. The Sri Lanka (Ceylon) origin is our own sourcing record and is not covered by that report.
Our Sourcing Record
-
Origin. We bought this stone in Sri Lanka and we list it as Sri Lanka (Ceylon) on that basis — our own record, not a finding on the GIA report, which carries no geographic origin field.
-
Treatment. The report records species, variety, weight, measurements, shape, colour, transparency, phenomenon and cutting style. We sell this stone as untreated — that is our statement and not a finding on the report. If treatment history matters to you, ask us what we know and how we know it before you buy.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
View it under a single direct light source, such as a flashlight or spotlight, to see the band glide across the dome — diffuse or multi-directional lighting will mute the effect.
-
Plan the setting around the cabochon's dome. At 9.63 x 7.55 x 5.41 mm this is a domed oval cabochon, so a bezel or a protective prong setting that leaves the dome unobstructed shows the band best — that is our own recommendation and not guidance from the report.
-
Ask any seller for the report number. A GIA report number can be checked at reportcheck.gia.edu, which is how you see for yourself which fields the document carries.
-
This is a single stone. It cannot be reordered and we hold no second example of it.

GIA Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl Report #6247017765 |
Why the Cat's Eye Effect Happens
Chatoyancy in chrysoberyl comes from microscopic needle-like inclusions lying parallel to one another inside the stone; light reflecting from them returns as a single band, and the band moves as the stone is turned. A cabochon is cut with its base across those needles so the band sits across the dome. GIA's report records that this stone displays chatoyancy. The three words we use for the band — sharp, silver, single — are our own and are not graded values.

Care
- GIA publishes general care guidance for gemstones.
- We prefer not to put a stone we did not set through an ultrasonic or a steam cleaner, because we cannot see how it is held once it is mounted — that is our own preference and not a warning from this report.
- Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are what we use, and we store each stone separately so nothing rubs against it.
