Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"This one is a 4.00 carat oval from Sri Lanka, and it comes with a GIA Sapphire Origin Report whose fields you can read for yourself: color, transparency, the two cutting-style entries, geographic origin and Additional Results. I would rather you judged it from the report and the photographs than from anything I say about it, so ask me for more images and look."
What the Report Records
Treatment. The Additional Results field of GIA Report #5232835332 reads Heated.
The limit of our own reporting. We report the fields GIA printed on this document, and that is the whole extent of what we claim about this stone.
Read it yourself. The report is reproduced in the images on this page, and GIA's own service at reportcheck.gia.edu returns the same fields against the report number. Check it there, and ask us for anything else you want to see before you buy.
Geographic origin. The Geographic Origin field reads Sri Lanka, and GIA prints a caveat beside it: "Any statement on geographic origin is an expert opinion based on a collection of observations and analytical data." We print the field and the caveat together and add nothing to either.
Cutting style, two fields. The report gives the crown and the pavilion separately: Crown: Modified Brilliant Cut, and Pavilion: Step Cut. The crown carries brilliant-style faceting; the pavilion carries step-style faceting.
Clarity. Under 10× we see minor inclusions, and that is our own assessment rather than a report value, because a GIA colored-stone report carries no clarity grade.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
Read GIA Report #5232835332 against the stone. Check the report number, the carat weight, the measurements, the color, the transparency, both cutting-style fields and the Additional Results entry against the physical stone before you finalise the purchase.
-
Look at the whole face-up view. An oval outline can show a darker band across the middle of the face-up area. Ask us for more images and video and look at the whole face before you decide.
-
Plan the setting around the stone's proportions. At 9.52 × 8.45 mm an oval outline has no corners. We would still choose a setting that holds the girdle securely all the way round; that is our own recommendation, not guidance from the report.
-
Use the Try Before You Buy option if you would like to see the stone in hand before finalising the purchase.
Species Characteristics
The three values below describe corundum as a mineral species. They are not findings about this individual stone. GIA prints them in the Characteristics panel of this report.
- Mineral: Corundum
- Mohs hardness: 9. Heat does not change corundum's Mohs hardness.
- Toughness: Excellent
Separately, this report prints September as the birthstone month. September belongs to sapphire, the variety, in every color.

Care
GIA publishes its own cleaning guidance and treats heat-treated sapphire as usually safe for ultrasonic and steam cleaners. We prefer not to use either, because we cannot see how a stone is held once it is set. That preference is ours, not a condition carried on the report.
- Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft brush
- Store separately to avoid surface contact
- Remove before heavy physical activity
