Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"This one is a 2.01 carat cushion, and it comes with a GIA Sapphire Report whose fields you can read for yourself. Face-up, at normal viewing distance, it looks eye-clean to me; under magnification you can see inclusions, and some show in GIA's report photograph. Ask me for more images and look at it before you decide."
What the Report Records
The limit of our own reporting. We report the fields GIA printed on this document. Where we add a view of our own, such as our sourcing record, the clarity assessment, the setting advice and the cleaning preference, we mark it as ours.
Read it yourself. The report is reproduced in the images on this page, and GIA's own service at reportcheck.gia.edu returns the same fields against the report number. Check it there, and ask us for anything else you want to see before you buy.
Color. The Color field reads Greenish Blue changing to Purple. In its Comments section, GIA prints: "This stone exhibits a change of color when viewed under daylight or fluorescent vs incandescent light."
Which light gives which color. The report names two colors and two kinds of light, but it does not say which color belongs to which light. Our own reading pairs them in order: greenish blue in daylight or fluorescent light, purple in incandescent light. We call this stone a color-change sapphire because the Color field and the Comment both record a change of color.
The report photograph. It shows this one stone twice, under two different lights. GIA prints beneath it: "Image is not to scale. Color is approximate."
Geographic origin. The Geographic Origin field reads Not Requested: an origin opinion was not requested from GIA for this report.
Additional Results. The field reads No Indications of Heating. That is a finding about heat, and it is what we mean when we call this stone unheated.
Cutting style, two fields. The report gives the crown and the pavilion separately: Crown: Brilliant Cut, and Pavilion: Modified Step Cut. The crown carries brilliant-style faceting; the pavilion carries step-style faceting in a modified form.
Clarity. Face-up, at normal viewing distance, we describe it as eye-clean. Under magnification inclusions are visible, and some can be seen in GIA's report photograph. That is our own assessment rather than a report value, because a GIA colored-stone report carries no clarity grade.
Our Sourcing Record
This stone was mined in Madagascar and bought by us in Sri Lanka. That record is ours, not a laboratory finding.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
Read GIA Report #1236949156 against the stone. Check the report number, the carat weight, the measurements, the color, the transparency, both cutting-style fields, the Additional Results entry and the Comments against the physical stone before you finalize the purchase.
-
Look at the whole face-up view, in more than one light. Ask us for more images and video, including views in daylight-type and incandescent light, and look at the whole face before you decide.
-
Plan the setting around the stone's proportions. It is sold loose, for your own jeweler to set. A cushion outline has rounded corners. We would choose a setting that holds the girdle securely; that is our own recommendation.
Species Characteristics
The three values below describe corundum as a mineral species. They are not findings about this individual stone. GIA prints them in the Characteristics panel of this report.
- Mineral: Corundum
- Mohs hardness: 9
- Toughness: Excellent
Separately, this report prints September as the birthstone month. September belongs to sapphire, the variety, in every color.

Care
GIA publishes its own cleaning guidance for sapphire. We prefer warm soapy water and a soft brush to ultrasonic or steam cleaners, because we cannot see how a stone is held once it is set. That preference is ours, not a condition carried on the report.
- Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft brush
- Store separately to avoid surface contact
- Once it is set, take it off for heavy physical work
