Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"This one is a 2.08 carat oval, and it comes with a GIA Sapphire Report whose fields you can read for yourself. Some inclusions are visible to my eye, without magnification. Ask me for more images and look at it before you decide."
What the Report Records
The limit of our own reporting. We report the fields GIA printed on this document. Where we add a view of our own, such as our sourcing record, the clarity assessment, the setting advice and the cleaning preference, we mark it as ours.
Read it yourself. The report is reproduced in the images on this page, and GIA's own service at reportcheck.gia.edu returns the same fields against the report number. Check it there, and ask us for anything else you want to see before you buy.
Geographic origin. The Geographic Origin field reads Not Requested: an origin opinion was not requested from GIA for this report.
Color. The Color field reads Green, and we quote it as printed.
Additional Results. The field reads Heated.
Comments. The report's Comments field reads None.
Cutting style, two fields. The report gives the crown and the pavilion separately: Crown: Brilliant Cut, and Pavilion: Modified Step Cut. We quote both fields as printed.
Our Clarity Assessment
Some inclusions are visible to the eye, without magnification. That is our own assessment rather than a report value, because a GIA colored-stone report carries no clarity grade. Inclusions can also be seen in the photograph printed on GIA's report.
Our Sourcing Record
This stone was mined in Tanzania and bought by us in Sri Lanka. That record is ours, not a laboratory finding.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
Read GIA Sapphire Report #1236949160 against the stone. Check the report number, the carat weight, the measurements, the shape, the color, the transparency, both cutting-style fields and the Additional Results entry against the physical stone before you finalize the purchase.
-
Look at the whole face-up view. Ask us for more images and video, and judge the stone face-up for yourself before you decide.
-
Plan the setting around the stone's proportions. It is sold loose, for your own jeweler to set. An oval outline has no corners. We would choose a setting that holds the girdle securely all the way around; that is our own recommendation.
Species Characteristics
The three values below describe corundum as a mineral species. They are not findings about this individual stone. GIA prints them in the Characteristics panel of this report.
- Mineral: Corundum
- Mohs hardness: 9
- Toughness: Excellent
Separately, this report prints September as the birthstone month. September belongs to sapphire, the variety, in every color.

Care
GIA publishes its own cleaning guidance for sapphire. We prefer warm soapy water and a soft brush to ultrasonic or steam cleaners, because we cannot see how a stone is held once it is set. That preference is ours, not a condition carried on the report.
- Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft brush
- Store separately to avoid surface contact
- Once it is set, take it off for heavy physical work
