The Owner's View
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"I buy on the paper first. This stone came in with a GIA Sapphire Origin Report, and the two fields I read before anything else are the geographic origin opinion and the TREATMENT line. Both are printed on it. Read them yourself at reportcheck.gia.edu before you read anything I write."
What the Report Prints
GIA's report places the geographic origin of this stone in Sri Lanka. GIA prints its own caveat beside that field: "Any statement on geographic origin is an expert opinion based on a collection of observations and analytical data."
-
Color: The report prints one color word, Blue, and no color grade. GIA issues no color grade for colored stones, so nothing on this page grades the color.
-
Treatment: Under its TREATMENT heading the report prints No Indications of Heating. That is a finding about heating, and about indications of it. We therefore use the narrow word unheated, and not a whole-stone term.
-
Weight and measurements: One loose stone of 5.39 carats, measuring 10.19 - 10.43 x 6.68 mm. The first two figures are the minimum and maximum diameter of a round stone, not a length and a width.
-
Cutting style: The report prints two cutting-style fields, one for each half of the stone: Modified Brilliant Cut on the crown, Step Cut on the pavilion.
-
Inscription: GIA's report records an inscription on the stone reading GIA 5231646038, the same number the report carries.
-
The document: GIA Sapphire Origin Report 5231646038, dated 31 July 2025. GIA prints on the report that it is not a guarantee or valuation, and we make no claim beyond what the paper carries. You can read it at reportcheck.gia.edu.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
Read the report yourself. Do not take a heating finding on a seller's word. GIA publishes this report at reportcheck.gia.edu, and the report number is printed above.
-
Ask us for more images. No single photograph settles how a stone looks to you. Ask us for more images, and look at them before you decide.
-
Plan the mounting around the measured dimensions. The report prints 10.19 - 10.43 x 6.68 mm. Ask your setter to build the mount around that girdle outline rather than around a single nominal diameter.
-
Compare like with like. If the heating finding and the lab document matter to you, ask any comparison stone's seller for the same document, not for a similar appearance.
-
Use the Try Before You Buy option if you would like to see the stone in hand before finalizing the purchase.

Species Characteristics and the Birthstone
GIA publishes that corundum — the species ruby and sapphire belong to — is 9 on the Mohs scale. That is a characteristic of the species and not a finding on this report, which prints no hardness. Mohs measures scratch resistance.
Sapphire is the September birthstone, in every color; GIA states that it "comes in a rainbow of other colors." Our report prints no birthstone.

Care
GIA publishes its own cleaning guidance for sapphire and attaches its own conditions to it. We prefer not to use ultrasonic or steam cleaning on a stone we did not set, because we cannot see how the stone is held — that is our preference, not a warning from the report. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are what we use. Store the stone separately from other jewelry, and take it off before swimming, exercising or handling household chemicals.
