Pear Cut Sapphires - Teardrop Loose Stones for Jewelry

Pear cut Sapphires - sometimes called teardrop - combines the rounded brilliance of an oval with a tapered point, producing one of the most romantic and visually distinctive shapes in faceting. Pear-shaped sapphires elongate the finger when set north-south, work beautifully as pendants and earrings where the point hangs naturally downward, and bring an unmistakable signature to any custom commission. For a full comparison of cuts for engagement rings, see our best sapphire cut guide.

Why Pear Cut Sapphires from Crescent Gems

Pear cuts demand careful proportion work - the curve must transition smoothly into the point, the shoulders must be symmetrical, and the bowtie effect must be minimised through careful pavilion cutting. Our pears are hand-cut in our Sri Lanka workshop. The majority are unheated - see our heated vs unheated guide. Premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Select pieces eligible for our Try-On programme.

How to Choose a Pear Sapphire

Length-to-width ratio. Classic pears run 1.50-1.75 length-to-width. Shorter ratios (1.30-1.50) read plump and rounded. Longer ratios (1.75-2.00) read sleek and dramatic. Bowtie. Most pear sapphires show a faint bowtie - a slightly darker zone across the widest point. We describe bowtie strength honestly on every listing. Colour by pear.Blue, teal, and peach pear sapphires are particularly elegant in pendant settings. Purple and pink pears suit east-west engagement ring settings. Setting the tip. Always use a V-prong to protect the pointed tip from chipping. See our sapphire engagement ring guide for setting advice.

Pear vs Other Elongated Cuts

Compared to oval: pear appears larger face-up at the same carat weight due to its longer outline. Compared to trillion: pear is more traditional and versatile; trillion is more geometric and modern. For matched pear pairs for earrings and three-stone rings, see our matched sapphire pairs collection. For other fancy formats, see our fancy cut collection.
