Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"This one is a 1.09 carat octagonal step cut, and it comes with a GIA Ruby Origin Report whose fields you can read for yourself. Face-up it looks eye-clean to me; under magnification you can see fractures. Ask me for more images and look at it before you decide."
What the Report Records
The limit of our own reporting. We report the fields GIA printed on this document. Where we add a view of our own, such as the clarity assessment, the setting advice and the cleaning preference, we mark it as ours.
Read it yourself. The report is reproduced in the images on this page, and GIA's own service at reportcheck.gia.edu returns the same fields against the report number. Check it there, and ask us for anything else you want to see before you buy.
Geographic origin. The Geographic Origin field reads Madagascar. In its Comments section, GIA prints: "Any statement on geographic origin is an expert opinion based on a collection of observations and analytical data." We print the field and the caveat together and add nothing to either.
Additional Results. The field reads Heated. That is the treatment entry GIA printed on this report, and we report it exactly as printed.
Shape and cutting style. The report gives Shape Octagonal and a single Cutting Style field, Step Cut. The trade calls an octagonal step cut an emerald cut; that name is ours, not the report's.
Clarity. Face-up, at normal viewing distance, we describe it as eye-clean. Under magnification fractures are visible, and some can be seen in GIA's report photograph. That is our own assessment rather than a report value, because a GIA colored-stone report carries no clarity grade.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
Read GIA Report #5232922092 against the stone. Check the report number, the carat weight, the measurements, the shape, the color, the transparency, the cutting style and the Additional Results entry against the physical stone before you finalise the purchase.
-
Look at the whole face-up view. Ask us for more images and video and look at the whole face before you decide.
-
Plan the setting around the stone's proportions. An octagonal outline has cut corners rather than points. We would choose a setting that holds the girdle securely at all four corners; that is our own recommendation.
Species Characteristics
The three values below describe corundum as a mineral species. They are not findings about this individual stone. GIA prints them in the Characteristics panel of this report.
- Mineral: Corundum
- Mohs hardness: 9. Heat does not change corundum's Mohs hardness.
- Toughness: Excellent
Separately, this report prints July as the birthstone month. July belongs to ruby.

Care
GIA publishes its own cleaning guidance for ruby. We prefer warm soapy water and a soft brush to ultrasonic or steam cleaners, because we cannot see how a stone is held once it is set. That preference is ours, not a condition carried on the report.
- Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft brush
- Store separately to avoid surface contact
- Once it is set, take it off for heavy physical work
This Stone
