Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"At 2.68 carats, this Ceylon cushion delivers exactly what I look for in an accessible fine sapphire: a vivid blue with eye-clean clarity — my own assessment, not a GIA grade — and a GIA report to back the rest up, at a size and price point that doesn't require an unheated premium. It's not a rarity play — it's a well-cut, well-documented stone that lets a buyer own genuine Sri Lankan sapphire honestly."
Rarity Analysis
Heated Ceylon blue sapphire in the 2–3 carat range is one of the most widely available combinations in the fine sapphire market — which means the value case here rests on documentation and quality, not manufactured scarcity claims.
-
Color: Described on the GIA report and by our own grading as a vivid royal blue — the hue most buyers picture when they think "sapphire," and consistently the most in-demand color in the corundum family.
-
Origin: Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the most trusted and longest-established source for fine blue sapphire; Ceylon origin carries a credibility premium over unattributed or undisclosed-origin stones, even at an accessible price point.
-
Treatment: This stone is heat treated — the industry-standard, permanent, fully disclosed enhancement used on the large majority of fine sapphire sold worldwide. It does not reduce durability or long-term stability, and it is stated plainly on the GIA report rather than left to guesswork.
-
Cut: The Mixed Brilliant rectangular cushion (brilliant crown, step-cut pavilion) is cut to hold color depth while still returning light — a more deliberate cutting choice than a purely commercial cut.
-
Documentation: GIA Report #6233922167 independently confirms weight, dimensions, color, transparency, and treatment — verification that many sapphires at this price point don't carry.
-
Combined value: No single factor here is exotic on its own — but a GIA-documented, Ceylon-origin, well-cut 2.68 ct sapphire at an honest heated price is a harder combination to find than the carat weight alone suggests.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
Check the GIA report language directly. Confirm the report states the color grade and "heated" treatment, and compare that language against the photos and 360° video before purchasing.
-
Evaluate cut performance in hand. A Mixed Brilliant cushion depends on crown/pavilion proportions for brightness — review the video to judge light return across the 8.63 × 7.28 mm face-up area rather than judging from carat weight alone.
-
Choose a mounting that protects the corners. Rectangular cushions have more vulnerable corners than round or oval cuts — a protective prong or reinforced corner detail is worth discussing with your setter.
-
Weigh heated vs. unheated pricing honestly. Heat-treated Ceylon blue sapphire of this size and quality typically costs a fraction of a comparable unheated stone — decide which trade-off matters more for your priorities before comparison shopping elsewhere.
-
Use the Try Before You Buy option if you would like to see the stone in hand before finalizing the purchase.
