Expert Opinion
Ahmed Shareek's Assessment
"This one is a 1.62 carat round from Sri Lanka, and it comes with a GIA Sapphire Origin Report whose fields you can read for yourself: color, transparency, the two cutting-style entries, geographic origin and Additional Results. I would rather you judged it from the report and the photographs than from anything I say about it, so ask me for more images and look."
What the Report Records
Treatment. The Additional Results field of GIA Report #2245017785 reads Heated.
Geographic origin. The Geographic Origin field reads Sri Lanka, and GIA prints a caveat beside it: "Any statement on geographic origin is an expert opinion based on a collection of observations and analytical data." We print the field and the caveat together and add nothing to either. Ceylon is the trade name for Sri Lanka, and we use it as a name for the stone and for nothing else.
Cutting Style, Two Separate Fields
The report gives the crown and the pavilion as two entries, and we print both as GIA prints them: Crown: Brilliant Cut / Pavilion: Modified Brilliant Cut. GIA publishes no definition of Modified Brilliant Cut, so we do not gloss the term.
Measurements, Color and Clarity
Measurements. The report prints 6.42 - 6.63 x 4.76 mm. The first two figures are the smallest and the largest diameter across the round outline, and the third is the depth.
Color. The Color field reads Blue, with nothing printed beside it. A GIA colored-stone report carries no color grade, so Blue is the whole of what this report says about color.
Clarity. Eye-clean: no inclusions visible to the unaided eye at normal viewing distance. That is our own assessment rather than a report value, because a GIA colored-stone report carries no clarity grade.
The limit of our own reporting. We report the fields GIA printed on this document, and that is the whole extent of what we claim about this stone.
Read it yourself. The report is reproduced in the images on this page, and GIA's own service at reportcheck.gia.edu returns the same fields against the report number. Check it there, and ask us for anything else you want to see before you buy.
Buying Guidance
A few practical points to weigh before purchasing this specific stone:
-
Read GIA Report #2245017785 against the stone. Check the report number, the carat weight, the measurements, the Color and Transparency fields, both cutting-style fields, the Geographic Origin field and the Additional Results entry against the physical stone before you finalise the purchase.
-
Look at the whole face-up view. Ask us for more images and for video, and look at the whole face of the stone rather than one photograph, before you decide.
-
Plan the setting around the stone's own geometry. A round outline has no corners. We would still choose a setting that holds the girdle securely all the way round; that is our own recommendation, not guidance from the report.
-
Use the Try Before You Buy option if you would like to see the stone in hand before finalising the purchase.
Species Characteristics
The three values below describe corundum as a mineral species. They are not findings about this individual stone. GIA lists them in the Characteristics panel of this report.
- Mineral: Corundum
- Mohs hardness: 9
- Toughness: Excellent
The same panel prints September as the birthstone month. September belongs to sapphire, the variety, in every color. Corundum as a species also includes ruby, whose month is July, so the panel's four cells do not all sit at the same level.

Care
We clean with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush, and we prefer not to put a stone through an ultrasonic or a steam cleaner, because we cannot see how it is held once it is set. That preference is ours, and it is not a condition carried on the report.
- Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap using a soft brush
- Store separately to avoid surface contact
- Remove before heavy physical activity
