Cushion Sapphires - Vintage-Style Loose Stones

The cushion cut - a square or rectangular shape with gently rounded corners and a brilliant facet pattern - is the most romantic and historically resonant cut in coloured-stone jewellery. It is the cut you find in antique sapphire rings, royal heirlooms, and modern vintage-inspired engagement settings. Cushion sapphires showcase colour depth like no other shape: the rounded corners trap light and saturate the body colour, producing the deep, glowing presence that defines a great sapphire. For a full comparison of cuts, see our best sapphire cut guide.

Why Cushion Cut Sapphires from Crescent Gems

Every cushion in this collection is hand-cut or recut in our Sri Lanka workshop. The majority are unheated - see our heated vs unheated guide. Premium pieces ship with GIA reports. Select pieces are eligible for our Try-On programme. For why Ceylon origin matters, see our Ceylon sapphire origin guide.

How to Choose a Cushion Sapphire

Square vs rectangular. Square cushions (1.00-1.10 length-to-width) suit geometric settings. Rectangular cushions (1.20-1.40) elongate slightly - more oval-like in feel. Colour by cushion. The cushion's light-trapping facets are particularly effective for deeply saturated colours: blue, teal, purple, and yellow all perform exceptionally. Lighter colours like peach and pink also suit cushions well. For engagement rings. Cushion is the second most popular sapphire engagement ring shape after oval. See our sapphire engagement ring guide and our sapphire size guide for sizing guidance.

Cushion vs Other Cuts

Compared to oval: cushion has a smaller face-up appearance at the same carat weight but deeper colour saturation. Compared to round: cushion is more romantic and vintage-feeling with lower cutting waste from the rough. Compared to emerald cut: cushion produces more sparkle; emerald cut produces more architectural refinement. For matched cushion pairs for three-stone rings, see our matched sapphire pairs collection.
